I know—most of us dread them. However, self-exam is a fiction in my book. By the time you can feel a lump, it is much larger than what a mammogram can detect. Case in point: at no time could any doctor detect my lump, even though I had invasive ductal carcinoma that had spread to 3 lymph nodes. The mammogram caught this and a subsequent ultrasound confirmed the cancer. Saved my life. So…..suck it up, let them flatten your breasts into uncomfortable pancakes on a plastic screen and rest assured that early detection is key in cancerland.
